The company’s roots trace back to 1871 when Simon Ingersoll patented the steam-powered rock drill, leading to the founding of the Ingersoll Rock Drill Company. Rand Drill Company was established around the same time by Addison Rand and Jasper Rand, Jr. These two firms, specializing in different segments of industrial drilling, combined their expertise to create Ingersoll Rand, which became a major force in industrial machinery and air power equipment.
